Sailing Alpena to Charlevoix

We left La Belle Vie in Alpena for the week to repair a leaky exhaust manifold.  We were very fortunate to have found a ride back to Ann Arbor from someone in the marina.

Last Friday David and I came back up to Alpena with Donna, Genia, and Gary, who were heading to the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island for the weekend.  Who had more fun?  Hmmm....

David and I decided to try to make the trip to Charlevoix in two days, so that we could get a ride back to Ann Arbor with Donna.  It made for two VERY long days, but we got going Saturday morning at 5 am, and kept going till we reached Cheboygan at 10:30 pm.

The start of the day was beautiful.  Here's a short video showing the departure.  The waters were very calm, and the sky was spectacular!

The skies clouded over later in the day.  This was a particularly interesting formation, with a taper of clouds funneling into the right.

We had fun, although we had to keep our cold weather gear on!

Coming into Cheboygan in the evening, the light took this impressive bluish glow.  This passing freighter sped by us.

The next morning we got a more leisurely start at 6 am.  We stopped in Mackinaw for fuel and Starbucks.  David was happy.

The conditions were extremely foggy.  We could barely see the mighty Mackinaw Bridge.

Sailing under the Mackinaw Bridge, I picked a part of the bridge that I thought would be high enough for the sailboat mast.  It was, but not by much!

West of the Mackinaw Bridge, near Wilderness State Park, we picked up some passengers.  Thousands of these little bugs that looked like mosquitoes without the stingers decided to hitch a ride with us.  Our sails were black with them.  Fortunately, they did not sting or bite, but they were annoying!

Coming into Lake Charlevoix was amazing!  I could not believe that we made it, after two weeks of traveling.  Genia, Donna, and Gary were waiting for us in Charlevoix.  We docked while waiting for the drawbridge to go up.

We were greeted by a beautiful sunset as we finished our trip to our Lake Charlevoix cottage.
We made it!!
